I could still smell her on my fur. It clung to me, a memory of another world. I was drunk with it, with the scent of her. I'd got too close. The smell of summer on her skin, the half-recalled cadence of her voice, the sensation of her fingers on my fur. Every bit of me sang with the memory of her closeness. Too close. About This Quote

I could still smell her on my fur. It clung to me, a memory of another world.I was drunk with it, with the scent of her. I'd got too close. The smell of summer on her skin, the half-recalled cadence of her voice, the sensation of her fingers on my fur.

Every bit of me sang with the memory of her closeness. Too close. I couldn't stay away.

I couldn't stop thinking about her, about the way she'd been to me, how she'd made me feel. When I slept, I dreamed about her scent and heard her voice in my head. Every time I touched another person, they were just like her -- not quite real enough to hold, but better than nothing at all.

Too close was an agreement that only one person could be allowed within arm's reach at any given time -- it's more than just proximity; it's intimacy and friendship, too. When you're too close to someone else, you can't take your eyes off them or your hands off them or your mind off them or your heart off them or your body off them for fear of losing them forever. And so you end up completely smitten and completely obsessed with this one person who is supposed to be "too close" to you without ever actually being able to touch them for yourself, because every time you try to get closer somehow you end up getting farther apart instead.
